About Planet Bike
In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.
Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.
Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.
Mission Workshop Vandal Contents
..and half my cat..
I just got this new bag for bike commuting. It cost a crap load of cash, but I was thinking on the way home that the cost is probably equivalent to about 4-5 full tanks of gas with current prices, so yeah, it's worth it to me since i'll use it almost every day.
It's the camo one on the right btw, I know there are two bags in this pic, but the reason for that is because I rode to work with the old Jansport and rode home with the Vandal, since it was delivered to work. As you can see, it holds a lot, and this wasn't even half full.
I've been a fan of messenger bags for a couple years now, but my left shoulder just can't hang anymore, so i'm switching to a backpack.

Microadventure 2: Use Your Weekend
My aim for the year is to showcase small, cheap, simple, close-to-home microadventures. Microadventures serve to scratch the itch for adventurous souls trapped by the bludgeoning of fate in sensible office jobs. They act as stepping stones for people who dream of a major expedition but feel that at the moment they are not quite ready. And they are a kick up the backside to anyone whinging and whining with excuses about how they don’t have the time or the money or the skills to get out there and challenge themselves. I have started deliberately small, with ideas that absolutely anyone can manage. In January I entered a race. And in February I went for a weekend away. These are micro microadventures. But they are brilliant.
If you add up all the weekends, statutory leave and Bank Holidays you’ll discover that you have at least 132 free days every year. 132 days is a long time. You could row across the Indian Ocean in 132 days. The difficulty of course is the fragmented nature of these 132 days. You have to be determined to use your weekends rather than frittering them with IKEA and the X-Factor.
So my microadventure for this month is a challenge to Use Your Weekend. Annoyingly I live about as far from wilderness as is possible. And yet by late morning on Saturday I was still high on a Welsh hillside, breathing in fresh air, looking down over the sunlit Bristol Channel, and about to scare myself silly on a downhill mountain bike trail.
Go somewhere you have never been before. Ride hard. Get wet, cold and muddy. Laugh with your mates. Then relax, aching and exhausted, having earned your beer. Use Your Weekend.
Do you have any examples of inspiring, invigorating weekend microadventures?
And do you have any recommendations of microadventures I can try this year? Have your say in the comments or let me know on Twitter @al_humphreys

I'm not sure quite what this was doing in the Musee Mechanique on Pier 45 in San Francisco. Almost all the other exhibits are mechanical instruments or gaming machines.

Vaude Bicycle Messenger Bag 25 - 10924010
The bike messenger's bag for medium to large items and professional use. Bike messengers can't be beat for clocking thousands of miles on their bikes. So they really rely on having durable, rugged load haulers. Our messenger bags are just the thing, made from tough Tarpaulin that can take a beating! And it's not super-huge, so it's easy to put on and take off yet still have enough volume to carry all of your daily essentials on your commute. And all this "Made in Germany"! Black only. Product Details: waterproof roll closure - internal organizer pockets- padded back - reflective elements. Material: Polyester Elastomere coated. Total volume: 25 liters.
Testing a Brompton for day-to-day practicality, including a visit to the recycling point. The huge front bag was crammed full of a month's worth of plastic bottles, but I still needed my rack bag to take the rest! Who needs a car for that? I could have made the same trip on my upright tourer-mtb using four panniers, or for even more capacity I could have added the rack bag and my messenger bag.
This is an older short wheelbase T6 model: six gears, carrier rack and front luggage block. Although it folds beautifully, for someone my height and leg strength it's an awful bike to ride compared with my Dahon Helios SL. That has faster wheels, more cockpit space for longer reach, bar ends, 9 gears, V-brakes, a long-enough seatpost, and it weighs about 19lbs. I wonder what newer Bromptons with the longer frame and lower handlebars would be like on Edinburgh's hills?
My brand! new! Vaude waterproof bike bags from Mountain Equipment Co-op. These are the 44 L capacity Vaude World Cycle II model, made of a rubberized waterproof fabric. These have no zippers (bike bag zippers and I have had poor prior relationships) but close and secure by rolling down and then strapping down. They include a handy shoulder strap for toting around stores or campsites.
The lock to frame mechanism is really cool, basiclly being a click on click off system that works by either pressing down on the frame, or lifting up by the handle. This picture show the bags on the bike after I'd adjusted and fitted them.

Stress. It is everywhere around us. Even worse, it gets inside us: sapping our energy, undermining our health, and making us more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and disease. Now, based on Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s renowned mindfulness-based stress reduction program, this groundbreaking book shows you how to use natural, medically proven methods to soothe and heal your body, mind, and spirit.
By using the practices described within, you can learn to manage chronic pain resulting from illness and/or stress related disorders…discover the roles that anger and tension play in heart disease… reduce anxiety and feelings of panic…improve overall quality of life and relationships through mindfulness meditation and mindful yoga. More timely than ever before, Full Catastrophe Living is a book for the young and the old, the well, the ill, and anyone trying to live a healthier and saner life in today’s world.
Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-known proponent of using meditation to help patients deal with illness. (The somewhat confusing title is from a line in Zorba the Greek in which the title character refers to the ups and downs of family life as "the full catastrophe.") But this book is also a terrific introduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraid it would be too difficult or would include religious practices they found foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept that involves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," from taking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents several meditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whether it's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of your body. The book goes into detail about how hospital patients have either improved their health or simply come to feel better despite their illness by using these techniques, but these meditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlook on life. "When we use the word healing to describe the experiences of people in the stress clinic, what we mean above all is that they are undergoing a profound transformation of view," Kabat-Zinn writes. "Out of this shift in perspective comes an ability to act with greater balance and inner security in the world." --Ben Kallen
