stationtostation6

stationtostation6

This performance is not just any performance. It uses instruments, but highly unusual ones; the instruments are trains and trams, bicycle bells and the Central Station-building itself, including all the people present. As a part of the performance, in cooperation with NS (=the Dutch railroad company), a whole range of trains and trams will enter the station in a strict choreography called The Tsunami, with all the train and tram engineers working together. Sounds from travellers will also be amplified through microphones as part of the performance. Achim wollscheid will use computer-driven magnets that play the bicycles in front of the Central Station like a toposonic typewriter.

I've had this in my parts bin forever. It was left on a set of handlebar and stem that I got cheap on eBay. The magnet I got from a used wheelset. They sat unused because I thought the setup was more difficult than it was.

Since CatEye has all the instructions online, I looked them up and found that they use all the same magnets and that the installation was very simple. I hooked them up to the Trek 720 and it works pretty well.

15.48 miles yesterday, round trip from my place to Rick's to install fenders.

Rider without a helmet mixing with cars near SJSU. No Helmet Here!

There are 85 million bicycle riders in the US.

770 bicyclists died on US roads in 2006, down just 14 from the year before. Over 90 percent died in crashes with motor vehicles.

The "typical" bicyclist killed on our roads is a sober male over 16 not wearing a helmet riding on a major road between intersections in an urban area on a summer evening when hit by a car.

About 540,000 bicyclists visit emergency rooms with injuries every year. Of those, about 67,000 have head injuries, and 27,000 have injuries serious enough to be hospitalized.

Bicycle crashes and injuries are under-reported, since the majority are not serious enough for emergency room visits. 44,000 cyclists were reported injured in traffic crashes in 2006.

1 in 8 of the cyclists with reported injuries has a brain injury.

Two-thirds of the deaths here are from traumatic brain injury.

A very high percentage of cyclists' brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet, estimated at anywhere from 45 to 88 per cent.

Direct costs of cyclists' injuries due to not using helmets are estimated at $81 million each year.

Indirect costs of cyclists' injuries due to not using helmets are estimated at $2.3 billion each year.

Helmet use in the US varies by orders of magnitude in different areas and different sectors of our society. White collar commuters probably reach 80 per cent, while inner city kids and rural kids would be 10 per cent or less. Overall, our best wild guess is probably no more than 25 per cent. Sommers Point, NJ, where a state helmet law is in effect, found that only 24 of the 359 students who rode to school in one week of the Winter of 2002 wore helmets (6 per cent) until the School District adopted a helmet rule. North Carolina observed 17 per cent statewide before their law went into effect in 2001.

Helmets are cheap. The typical discount store price has risen from under $10 to about $20, but there are still models available for under $10 at major national retailers including Target and Wal-Mart.

Lenox Federal Platinum 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1

Like its namesake Lenox china pattern, this stainless flatware is simple and elegant. The handles are gracefully tapered, with two small bands of gleaming platinum providing the perfect finishing touch.

Simplicity and refinement come together in Lenox's Federal Platinum flatware. Crafted from lustrous and longwearing 18/8 stainless steel, the pattern is a fine choice for entertaining and adds sophistication to impromptu celebrations. The design is graceful yet substantial, with a clean flare to the handle, a gently arced silhouette, and a gleaming mirror finish. Raised platinum banding at the neck and handle end adorn each piece.
This 5-piece place setting for one includes a 7-inch salad fork, a 7-7/8-inch dinner fork, a 9-3/8-inch knife, a 7-inch soupspoon, and a 6-1/4-inch teaspoon. A seamless pairing for Federal Platinum china, the flatware also looks lovely alongside unbanded china. FED-2c + Jupiter-3

FED-2c + Jupiter-3

I bought this camera on a camera show in May 2007 for ~ $15 (body, Industar 26m lens, leather case). The lens in the picture is a Jupiter-3 5cm 1:1.5. I traded it for a Kiev/Contax mount Jupiter-9 with a RFF member form U.K.

This camera was a "love at first sight". It is my first FED-2, but now I know why so many people praise this camera. It's good size, easy to use, very robust and reliable. There are no slow speeds which could break. The long rangefinder base is great for precise focussing of lenses such as the Jupiter 3 (50mm f/1.5) or Jupiter 9 (85mm f/2) with shallow DOF. On this model the shutter speeds can be set even before cocking the shutter and mine even has "ears" (strap lugs :) Two minor inconveniencies are the diopter adjustment lever that never stays in place, and the sunken accessory shoe.

Where do FED's come from?

Where do FED's come from?

Why the FED factory, of course. I didn't get a tour. And since they now make tank parts, I don't think they're letting Americans in for tours (I could be wrong). I stayed about 5 minutes away (by car) from the factory in Kharkov.

This is a very bad photo take from a car at roughly 60mph (~100km/h). I'm only posting it because the subject matter is cool (at least to me).

Gun Holster fits Colt 45 1911 & Springfield 1911 A1

This is a brand new holster from a major USA manufacturer, previously only available in retail gun shops. It combines the ruggedness and stability of a belt holster with the convenience of a clip-on. It's multi-layer nylon cushion fit design molds itself to the shape of the gun. This holster is ambidextrous and includes both 2" wide belt loops and a sturdy, high carbon, black metal clip. The holster may be worn either left or right handed; it includes belt loops on both sides and the metal clip can be moved from side to side. The polyslide sight channel, soft nylon lining and reinforced thumb break insure a quick release and a smooth draw. The thumbreak is positioned across the hammer instead of the grip for a natural feel and a positive draw. An extra magazine pouch mounted on the front channel of the holster is standard. The holster is constructed using only top grade, new materials, and no surplus automotive foams, fillers or liners. The Cordura nylon exterior provides resistance to scuffs, abrasions and moisture. The interior features a smooth nylon lining and a closed cell foam moisture barrier. It is sewn using nylon thread and edgebound with nylon binding tape using double needle stitching to provide about 14 stitches per inch reinforcement. The combination of materials and hand finishing provides a strong, good looking, long wearing holster.

Great Wildebeest Migration safari in Kenya and Tanzania

Great Wildebeest Migration safari in Kenya and Tanzania

Great Wildebeest Migration safari in Kenya and Tanzania

Discover Kenya’s and Tanzania’s most stunning national parks and national reserves. Witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles, The Great Wildebeest Migration, where no less than a million wildebeest and their migration partners move across the vast savannah of the Masai Mara and Serengeti National Parks.

Your safari begins with a journey right into the heart of the Masai land where you will be hosted by Masai tribesman – this is generally regarded as being the highlight of the trip for many of our past-clients. A totally unique experience of accompanying Masai guides as they walk through the Loita hills, sharing their knowledge of the local plants and animals with you. You can herd cattle with the men, bead jewelry with the women, visit the children in their little local schools and later fill your evenings with their stories by the fire. After your busy day, relax in the waters of natural hot springs – all under the equatorial stars.

Your next destination, the Masai Mara National Reserve, is said to be one of the world’s finest game-viewing destinations. The richness of the fauna and flora and the untouched life of Africa, continuing as it has for thousands of years, is only secondary to the Mara's annual migration of wildebeest. The spectacle of more than a million of these creatures moving as a great mass across the savannah is one of the most breathtaking sights in nature. Unique pleasure of a night game drive will also take a place here, where you can see a wide variety of animals not normally seen during the day, including aardvarks, bat-eared fox, porcupines, bush babies, bushbucks, mongoose, genet cats and a number of nocturnal birds. Why not ask us to book you an amazing hot-air balloon ride over the Masai Mara to see the vast expanses and wildlife from an unforgettable perspective.

Your journey leads you across the border to Tanzania up to Lake Victoria - Speke Bay. Divided between three countries: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, this is Africa’s largest lake and the world’s third-largest freshwater lake. Speke Bay is part of Speke Gulf, named after the famous explorer John Hanning Speke, who, in 1858, discovered Lake Victoria to be the source of the Nile. A traditional canoe trip followed by a guided walk in a local fishing village will give you a real insight into daily life on Lake Victoria.

After a short drive you will arrive at Serengeti National park (an endless savannah that sprawls across 5757 square miles - that’s 14,763 square km!), which will be your home for the next three nights. This itinerary is designed to allow you to cover almost every part of the park, giving you the best views of the natural beauty, as well as the best game-viewing opportunities. You will move from the west to the central area, then to the south ensuring that you can capture the great wildebeest migration, no matter what period of the year you travel.

The migration traditionally follows the rains to take advantage of the new grasses on the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara. Theoretically, if traditional weather patterns occur annually, the following information will provide a basic idea of how the migration moves throughout the year:

- Late December / early January – Ndutu region, Tanzania.
Traditionally, this is when the calves are born. The migration remains passive until April when the calves are strong enough to start moving north.

- Early April / May / June – Serengeti, Tanzania.
The migration begins moving north-west following the long rains across the Serengeti plains towards the western corridor and the Grumeti River.

- June / July – Western corridor, Tanzania.
The animals gather in the western corridor.

- August / September – Masai Mara, Kenya.
The migration crosses the Grumeti River and moves north-east into the northern steps of Masai Mara.

- October / November / Early December – Masai Mara, Kenya/Northern Tanzania / Serengeti.
As the short rains begin in northern Tanzania, the migration begins to move south back into the Klein’s/Lobo region of the Serengeti. From here, they follow the rains through to Seronera and end up at Ndutu for the calving season. As the migration follows the rains, there is no hard and fast rule as to where the animals will be, and when.

Your next destination will be the stunning Ngorongoro Crater, 12.4 miles (20 km) wide, 1968ft (600m) deep, makes it the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. It is home to a permanent population of more than 30,000 animals, including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes as well as many of the plains herbivores such as wildebeest, Thomson's gazelle, zebra and reedbuck, not to forget the thousands of flamingos wading in the shallows of Lake Magadi, the soda lake on the floor of the crater. Maasai tribesman have grazing rights in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, so it is not unusual to see Maasai cattle and buffalo grazing together, with a l
